Fiftieth Anniversary

What a milestone for a club, to be able to use the same flying field for fifty years and counting.

This of course is only possible with the extreme understanding of our landowner whose family have always been sympathetic towards our activities, although they have no interest in model flying.

When the family moved from a farm in the Bradfield area of Sheffield, we were given the opportunity to fly in the meadow on Woodsetts Road which was fenced off at the bottom of our runway and sheep occupied the lower end of the field. In those days there was no limit to our flying area which has been restricted to avoid flying over the road and keep good separation from our neighbours. Our main runway was moved further down the field.

As referred to elsewhere on this web site we have had a variety of club houses and had use of the runways from very early on. We laid the drive in 2005 and fitted a new gate in 2020. (Link to photograph Old GateNew gate)

The club has seen family day BBQs and fly for fun days and for several years in the late 70s and early 80s the club hosted scale days with on more than one occasion 21 scale aircraft lined up to take their turn to impress the rest of the pilots, who all voted for their own favourite. We have seen many changes to our rules as we always try to cause as few problems as possible for our landowner and try to keep a low profile in the area. Every member should be very aware of how lucky we are to have the facility.

On our fiftieth anniversary of NASA in 2017 we gifted Charlie and Elaine, our landowners, with mementos to say thank you. Link to photograph.
